On the basis of your reading the passage, answer
the following questions in about 30-40 words
each. |
a) Describe
the emperor’s palace and the garden. |

The emperor’s palace was the most
beautiful in the
world. It was
built entirely of porcelain. The garden had
the loveliest of
flowers and beyond it, there was
a forest, with lofty
trees, that sloped down to the
deep blue sea. |
|
b) How did the emperor come to know about the
nightingale? |
|
Travellers from every
country in the world came
to the emperor’s beautiful city and on
their return home
they wrote books
describing the nightingale as ‘the most beautiful of all’. Some
of these books
reached the hands
of the emperor and this
is how he
came to know
about the nightingale. |
|
c) What was the emperor’s decree? |
|
The emperor decreed that the nightingale was to remain
at court. She
would have her own
cage, with the
liberty to go
out twice a day, and
once during the night. |
|
d) Describe the artificial nightingale. |
|
The artificial nightingale was covered all
over with diamonds, rubies and sapphires.
As soon as the clockwork bird was wound
up, it could
sing like the real one but without getting tired, and
it could move
its glittering tail
up and down. |
