Structure of Our Solar System-Textual Exercise

KWL & LMR to be made by students

3.  Answer the following questions in 10 to 20 words.

a)  What is meant by a ‘solar system’?

Ans-The family of the sun is known as the solar system. Our  solar system consists of the sun at its centre and with planets, their satellites and some celestial bodies known as asteroids, meteoroids and comets revolving around the sun.

b)  Name all the eight planets as per their distance from the sun.

Ans- In order of their distance from the sun, the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

c)  What is a galaxy?

Ans- A  galaxy is a system of billions of stars, together with gas  and dust, held together by gravitational

attraction.

4.  Answer the following question in 50 to 70 words.

a)  Draw a neat and labelled diagram of the different phases of the moon.

Ans-  Please refer the book . Fig-1.6  on page no-8

b)  What do you mean by a solar eclipse? Explain with the help of well-labelled diagram.

Ans- As the earth revolves around the sun, it sometimes happens that the sun, the moon and the

earth are in a straight line, with the moon in between the earth and the sun. Then the shadow

of the moon falls on a portion of the earth’s surface. This is known as a solar eclipse.

Draw the diagram. Fig-1.8 on page no-10

c)  What are the favourable conditions that facilitate life on the earth?

Ans- The favourable conditions that facilitate life on the earth are as follows:

·         The earth is at an optimum distance from the sun. Therefore, it is neither too hot nor too cold. The suitable temperature makes life possible on earth.

·         The earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which is composed of life-supporting  gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc.

·         The ozone layer present in the atmosphere protects living things from the harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun.

·         The presence of an adequate amount of water in oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, etc. favours the evolution of life.

·         Suitable seasons and weather conditions also support the existence of life.

5.  Just like sunlight and moonlight, is there anything known as the earthlight?

If your answer is yes, then where do you think it is found?
