Activity sheet 3
Materials required: Washing powder (especially Nirma), citric acid, baking soda, ice cubes, saucer, water. Procedure:
Activity: 1. Dissolve 1 capful of washing powder (especially Nirma) in a mug of water. 2. Dissolve together citric acid and baking soda together in a steel vessel. Touch the vessel. 3. Melt ice cubes. 4. Keep water in a saucer in sunlight
Answer the following questions 1. Did the water become warm on dissolving washing powder in water? The water became warm after adding washing powder.
2. What do think must have happened heat is released or heat is absorbed? Heat is released.
3. Did the vessel become warm on adding citric acid and baking soda? The vessel becomes warm.
4. What must have happened? Bubbles were released/ heat released.
5. Ice melts on heating. Why does the ice cube melt even when it is not heated? It takes heat from the surrounding
6. When does liquid change into vapour state? Why did the water evaporate from the saucer? When the liquid is heated it changes into vapours. The water evaporates due to heat of the surrounding.
7. How are activities 1 and 2 different from activities 3 and 4? Activities 1 and 2 release energy whereas activities 3 and 4 absorb heat energy
8. Which of the above activities can be classified as physical or chemical changes? Activity 1 and 2 are chemical changes. Activity 3 and 4 are physical changes.
