ACTIVITY 1

Aim: To investigate that light travels in straight lines. Materials required: A lighted candle and a flexible rubber tube or a straw. Procedure: Fig.: Investigation of the nature of path of light while travelling 1. Place a lighted candle on a table as shown in the diagram. 2. View the candle using a rubber tube as shown in figure [a]. 3. Close one eye and try to look at the flame of the candle with the other eye. 4. Now bend the straw /tube from the middle. Once again look at the flame as shown in figure [b]. 5. For better results, do this activity in a dark room.

Observation: The candle flame is visible through a straight rubber tube or straw. The flame is not visible through a bend rubber tube or straw.

Conclusion: Light travels in straight lines.

Complete the activity 2 given on between us resources , Do Enable editing, type the observation and conclusion and upload it today itself...

Aim: To form shadows on a wall.

Materials required: Wall, white screen, any source of light (like a flash light).

Procedure: 1. In a dark room, hang a white screen on a wall. 2. At a certain distance, fixed the position of light source such that light directly projects on the white screen. 3. Now, place your hands as shown in figures in between the source and the screen. 4. Observe the changes that take place on the screen and record the observation. 5. Now, take your hands from between the light source and the screen.

6. Record the observation.

7. Repeat the above mentioned steps a few more times.

Observation: 1. When a hand place in between the source and the screen then a shadow is formed on the screen. 2. After removing the hand, the shadow disappears.

Conclusion: It is apparent that, by obstructing the straight path of light with an object, one can form a shadow.
