What
is computer?
o
A computer is
an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability
to store, retrieve,
and process data.
You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games,
and browse
the Web.

It is Data Processing

§ Data : Data is
defined as facts or figures, or information that's stored in or used by a
computer. An example of data is information collected for
a research paper. An example of data is an email.
§ Processing : Processing is an act of changing the given data
into a more useful form by applying a sequence of operations.
§ Output : Output is the final result which is obtained after
the processing of data.

What is Apache Open
Office ?
o
Apache OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and
more. It is available in many languages and works on
all common
computers. It stores all your data in an international open
standard format and can also read and write files from
other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used
completely free of charge for any purpose.

MS Office
vs Open Office
o
MS Office and
Open Office are popular software that
users prefer. Though both of the software offers the same functionality to the
users, they have many differences between them.
o
Open Office comes
only in a single version which is free to download. On the other hand, MS
Office has many versions, such as, Professional, Home and Student. Unlike Open
Office, MS Office is not free.
o
Open Office is an
open source which means that the source code is public, and it can be changed
and customized by the public. On the contrary, MS Office is not an open source
and is proprietary software. As such, the public cannot make changes or
customize it.
o
When talking of the
Graphical User Interfaces, they are different in MS Office and Open Office.
Older MS Office versions, like Office 2003, had a menu-based system which was similar to Open Office. But today, MS
Office uses a ribbon-like interface.
o
Open Office
offers support for all MS Office document formats. However, only new MS Office
supports Open Office documents.
o
Calc is the name
given to the spreadsheet application in Open Office, and Excel is the name
given to the MS Office spreadsheet. It is also seen that Open Office Impress is
better then MS PowerPoint. Open Office Impress helps to create slide shows in
an easier way than the MS Office PowerPoint.

Updates in Open
Office are free whereas it is not like that with MS Office updates.

more than Open Office.

What is OpenOffice Calc?
o
OpenOffice Calc is the spreadsheet part
of the OpenOffice software
package. Calc is
similar to Microsoft Excel, with almost the same abilities. Calc is capable of opening and
saving spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel's file format.

Practical work on following Spreadsheet given in Textbook/E-book page no 18 :
- Enter the data given in pg. no. 18.
- Add a column ‘Total’ after the last column.
- Change the price of a pencil to Rs.7 per piece and change the calculations accordingly.
- Change the format of the column name ‘Price per piece’ as given below:
- save the worksheet as ‘Stationery’
