Globe- Latitude & Longitude Notebook & Workbook

KWL & LMR is to be made by students

3.  Answer the following questions in 10 to 20 words.

a)  Why is the Torrid Zone the hottest zone on the earth?

Ans- Due to the tilted axis of the earth, sunrays fall vertically between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn throughout the year. This region receives maximum heat and thus is the hottest zone on the earth. This zone is also known as the Tropical Zone

b)  State any two characteristics of Parallels of Latitude.

Ans- Characteristics of Lines of Latitude

  ● Latitudes run in an east-west direction.

  ● Latitudes are equidistant from one another or in simple words; they are parallel to one another. Thus, these lines are often called parallels of latitude

c)  What is the geographic grid?

Ans-The horizontal lines of latitude run in an East-West direction  and similarly vertical lines of longitude run in a North-South direction .Both these lines form network called the grid.

4.  Answer the following questions in 50 to 70 words.

a)  Differentiate between the Parallels of latitudes and the Meridians of longitudes.

Ans -In textbook Page-20 Table no-2.1

 b)  With the help of a diagram, explain the different heat zones of the earth.

Ans- Fig 2.5 on pg no 17

The Torrid Zone-Torrid means hot. Due to the tilted axis of the earth, sunrays fall vertically between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn throughout the year. This region receives maximum heat and thus is the hottest zone on the earth. This zone is also known as the Tropical Zone. Most of the southern part of India lies in this zone.

The Temperate Zone-Temperate means moderate. This zone consists of latitudes that lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere, and between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere. These regions are neither too hot nor too cold as they receive the slanting rays of the sun.

The Frigid Zone- Frigid means  cold. The Frigid Zone in the Northern Hemisphere comprises latitudes between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole. Similarly, in the Southern Hemisphere it comprises of latitudes that lie between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole. The sun rays in this zone are extremely inclined. Therefore, this zone is very cold.

5. Give reasons.

a)  There is a need for Standard Time.

Ans-Each country has several meridians passing through it. If places on each meridian were to follow their own local time, it would be difficult to prepare a common railway or airline time table. To avoid such confusion, each country follows a standard time. This standard time is the time of the central meridian passing through that country.

b)  International Date Line is a zig- zag line.

Ans-The International Date Line avoids dividing nations and islands into two different days. Thus, it runs zig-zag.

c)  The lines of latitude are also known as Parallels of Latitude.

Ans-Latitudes are equidistant from one another or in simple words; they are parallel to one another. Thus, these lines are often called parallels of latitude.

6.  Solve the following problems:

a)  What will be the local time in Prayagraj (Allahabad) (82½°E), when it is 15:00 hrs in

Greenwich (0°)?

Ans-20:30 hrs

b)  At 14:00 hrs, Maria is having her lunch in Greenwich (0°). Her friend, Jolly, is in New

York (74°W). What is the time in New York and which meal of the day is Jolly enjoying?

Ans- 09:00 hr breakfast

c)  If it is noon at Greenwich, calculate the local time of the places located on the following

longitudes.

60° W -      08:00 hrs

60° E -         16:00 hrs

45° W-        09:30 hrs

45° E-         15:30 hrs

7. Map Work

On an outline map of India, locate and label the following:

a)  The Tropic of Cancer

b)  Standard Meridian of India
